Connect with a Shipibo Onanya
(Indigenous Master Healer)

Onanya Rogelia works in the ancestral way, the old way. She drinks ayahuasca to doctor. She has been practicing traditional ancestral Shipibo medicine for over 40 years, and has an immense and vast knowledge and wisdom of healing with the plants.

You will be able to connect with the curandera more often than just in ceremony. Throughout the 10 days, you will have opportunities to engage regularly with Onanya Rogelia as she offers plant supports for your individual healing process, and checks in with you occasionally to see how you are doing.

You will have the opportunity to experience various different aspects of ancestral Shipibo medicine, including traditional plant baths, plant saunas and personalized medicinal plant remedies, in addition to medicine ceremonies.

As the primary Maestra leading this retreat, Onanya Rogelia will be offering 3 ayahuasca ceremonies. Traditionally, only the curandera (or curandero) drinks the medicine in the ceremony while the ceremony participants attend, yet do not drink. Ceremony participants do, however, indeed experience powerful healing from the ceremony, the curandera, curandero, and the plants.

After the 1st traditional ceremony in this retreat, as a participant you have the option in the 2nd and 3rd ceremonies, and are welcomed to drink the medicine.

The majority of the informative retreat workshops on Shipibo ancestral medicine, culture and healing will be led by Onanya Rogelia and on occasion when she is not offering a workshop, it will be led either by Maestro Mike or by a member of ASOMASHK (Association of Shipibo-Conibo Onanya healers).

During the particular workshop on traditional Shipibo healing massage you will have an opportunity to receive a massage. You will have a chance to book further individual healing massages with Maestra Rogelia throughout the duration of the retreat.

Personalized Medicinal Plant Remedies

The Shipibo Cultural Immersion retreat is unique in that each participant receives a personalized medicinal plant remedy.  During the 1st medicine ceremony, Onanya Rogelia will ‘see’ each person and determine which plants will be offered to support each person’s individual healing process.  All medicinal plants, in the form of remedies, plant saunas and plant baths are harvested, prepared and offered by Onanya Rogelia. 

Plant baths and plant saunas, as well as remedies, are some of the traditional components of ancestral Shipibo medicine.  Not only will you have a chance to connect with various medicinal plants, in addition to 3 medicine ceremonies, you will have multiple sources of healing, all of which combine to expand and deepen your healing process.

Immerse in Shipibo Culture

Experience an empowering alternative to ayahuasca tourism, and immerse into elements of Shipibo culture.  You will be staying on the homestead of an Onanya healer and her family, and also have a chance to learn more about Shipibo ancestral medicine, culture and healing through 7 Maestra and Maestro-led informative workshops on:

  • Supporting healthy working conditions, good pay and respectful treatment of the Onanyas, Maestros and Maestras, as well all Shipibo people employed by this retreat offerings:  cooks, transportation drivers, cleaners, groundskeeping, translators, etc.  

A word on financial transparency:  All retreat profits are directly received by Onanya Rogelia.  All those employed by Shipibo Cultural Immersion Retreat, including the healers themselves and the hosting family are all paid well. Additionally, a fair stipend is offered to the retreat organizer and integration guide for their work in supporting the retreat.  

Meet The Onanya

 

Onanya Maestra Rogelia

Onanya Rogelia is a traditional Shipibo doctor who been practising ancestral medicine for over 40 years.  She is an indigenous Master Healer who has an immense and vast knowledge of the medicinal plants of the Amazon. The word ‘Onanya’ is a Shipibo term that translates as ‘one who knows’, ‘one who cures with the plants’.  

Onanya Rogelia comes from a long lineage of Shipibo healers.  She was born deep in the Amazonian jungle, along the Pisqui river in Peru.  Once as a young child and once as a teenager, she experienced significant long term illness, where she was ultimately healed by the plants and her Onanya grandfather. 

Rogelia grew up in a time and place where she describes, ‘There were no pills, you went to the plants for everything’. When she was very young she was interested in learning how to heal and cure people. She began to formally learn the ways of healing at 11 years old when her mother began taking her along to learn how to attend and support childbirths. She went on to learn from her Onanya grandfather, uncle and older brothers. She has dieted many, many plants, at times for up to 2 years in length. Making the medicine accessible and affordable is important to Rogelia, and money is not her central priority. She has a large and loving family, many grandchildren who adore her, which is why she prefers to live and work close to home.

Onanya Maestro Mike

Maestro Mike began learning the ways of Shipibo ancestral medicine from his mother, Onanya Rogelia, when he was a child.  For the past 10 years he has been undergoing an in-depth apprenticeship with Onanya Rogelia,  and is now a strong curandero in his own right.

Maestro Mike has a particular affinity with the powerful plant Tobacco, as well as an interest in continuing to learn how to process plant remedies – which is traditional to the work of Shipibo women. It is a joy for him to assist in ceremony and throughout retreats. When he is not joining healing forces with his mother, he is leading ceremonies and offering healing in his remote village on the Ucuayali River.

Accommodation:

When I myself felt called to travel to the jungle of Peru to seek healing, I was wary.  I wondered how I would be able to find an authentic and powerful healer while avoiding ayahuasca tourism and indigenous exploitation.
